What style of Acoustic Guitar is right for me?

Acoustic guitars come in many different shapes and sizes. The dreadnought is a very popular acoustic guitar among bluegrass and country guitarist. Players like Tony Rice always played a Dreadnought. Country artist like Brad Paisley, Dwight Yoakum, Blake Shelton play on Dreadnoughts as well. While guitarist like John Mayer, Eric Clapton, and Tommy Emmanuel like OM Style guitars. OM stands for Orchestral Model. Fingerpickers tend to find these guitars better for that style. Many Rock guitarist like the Jumbo's and 12-String Guitars. Artist like Tom Petty, David Gilmour, and Chris Cornell play this style of guitar.

A really good choice for beginners would be a Dreadnought or Concert. Guitars like the Yamaha FG800 or the Epiphone Starling are perfect to get started. For kids under 10 you might want to consider a 3/4 size guitar like the Yamaha JR1 and JR2. The 3/4 size guitar is a little smaller in size and easier for smaller players.

Do Acoustic Guitars vary in tone and sound?

Acoustic guitars come in various tones due to attributes like wood, bracing, and design.

The wood material influences the way an acoustic naturally sounds. Tone woods such as mahogany and Koa have a nice warm and darker sound compared to maple back and sides which produce a brighter tone. Neither one is better than the other. They're just different. There may be different combinations of tonewoods used for different parts of the guitar. Example, a lot of acoustics have mahogany necks yet may have a Sapele or Ovangkol back and sides. Many acoustic guitars have Sitka Spruce tops while the back and sides could be mahogany or maple.  

What makes an Acoustic Guitar Electric?

By adding electronics or a pickup system to an acoustic guitar it becomes an acoustic-electric guitar. The most popular pickups systems are Preamps. They include a control panel on the acoustic which consist of a Volume, EQ, Tone Control, Blend and Phase switch. The actual pickup is usually under the bridge or under the bridge saddle. However some are microphones which are placed under the bridge saddle inside the guitar or floating inside the guitar around the sound hole. The jack is usually placed where the strap button would be on the bottom of the guitar.

Do acoustic guitars come with cases? 

Some acoustic guitars come with a case. All PRS Acoustics either come with a hard shell case or Deluxe Gig Bag. Most acoustics however do not come with cases unless specified. Higher end guitars will usually come with cases. Acoustics in the price range of $800 to $1000 usually come with a nice Hybrid Gig Bag. The Hydrid case is a mix between a hard shell case and a gig bag. Guild Acoustics in that price range usually come with a Hybrid Case.
